To my mind, the most beneficial Home Exercise Equipment -- if you're starting out to get into shape from home, are the following:
Cable Crossover Machine
I use a similar Cable Crossover Machine at home after trying several other Home Fitness Equipment.
If you have space in your home to put the crossover machine along the wall, you only need an incline bench and some free weights and you have a complete training system at home. The nice thing about a Crossover Machine is, you don't fill up the whole room with equipment. Most sports injuries do not occur to the muscles or bones, but to the joints, tendons and ligaments. The Crossover Machine is excellent to strengthen the joints and connective tissues before you do any kind of strength or muscle training. As a past national class tennis player, I stay in great shape by simply using the Crossover machine and free weights with an incline bench.
A Cable Crossover Machine exercises virtually every muscle group in your body. Uniquely designed to train Legs, Arms, Chest and Back muscles, this machine is one of the most functional and versatile training units available.
If you have a desire to get into shape and stay that way, you almost can't make a mistake in getting a Crossover Machine. They cost between $500 and $3500.

Incline Bench
In combination with a Cable Crossover Machine above or any other training equipment, you only need an incline bench such as this one you see here, with some free weights, (dumbells and barbells), and you can develop a great body from home.
The bench enables you to do most of the sitting and lying free weight training exercises which are necessary for you to get your body in shape - and keep it that way.
Without the bench, many basic resistance exercises are not possible, so you need to gain strength and/or to shape your muscles so your friends will compliment on how great you look! Good quality benches cost $300 and upwards.

It's a good idea if you use a stationary bike to warmup for any kind of training or to get into shape by burning fat and cycling for at least 30 minutes per session.
Make sure you get one which has a flexible program so you can train in a variety of ways, such as cycling up hills or doing interval cycling(cycling faster and slower alternatively).
The only disadvantage of a bike is it could get a bit boring at times...
